Cases are used at IIMC and other institutions for teaching. A case generally describes a business problem from the perspective of the executive decision-maker, who is often the case protagonist. For example, a case might pose a challenge such as “What should be the pricing model for a new service offering?” or “Should this company acquire another company and why?”
Cases serve as metaphors for a more general class of business problems. By addressing several employee management problems in a human resources course, for instance, students are assumed to develop a perspective on what factors influence this class of decisions in most such situations. Another example could be, in the process of considering a decision to acquire a company, students might learn to consider how to evaluate companies, the costs of such an acquisition, the benefits of it as well as the possible alternative approaches to addressing the same business need.
