We are living through an unprecedented global situation. The year 2020 was a disaster for the entire mankind due to pandemic caused by COVID-19. We had to face lot of challenges in running our programmes in meeting the captive schedule of classes, admission circle and placement process. With the emergence of new normal, we have been able to cope up with the challenge and found our way forward. Distant Online to Campus Online classes are on. We seamlessly shifted to a fundamental mix of 'Work from Home' and 'Work from Office' option. Professor Subir Bhattacharya has taken over the charge of Director in Charge of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta with effect from 25 March 2021 (forenoon) after acceptance of resignation of the former Director, Professor Anju Seth by the Board of Governors, IIM Calcutta as per Section 16 (9) of IIM Act 2017. A change in admission criteria 2021 has been introduced, making the admission process more lucrative for candidates from diverse academic background. The flagship annual event, The Convocation will be resumed virtually in May this year.
IIM Calcutta celebrated 59th Foundation Day online on November 14, 2020. Shri Amolak Rattan Kohli, the former Governor of Mizoram and an IIM Calcutta alumnus was the chief guests. We conferred 14 alumni with Distinguished Alumnus Award this year. The IIM Calcutta Centre for Entrepreneurship & Innovation (CEI) in collaboration with the IIMC Innovation Park (IIMCIP) and Entrepreneurship Cell has created, IIMCreate - the Entrepreneurship Webinar Series with an objective to feature successful IIM Calcutta alumni entrepreneurs, who will share with us their journey of value-creation, innovation and inspiration. IIM Calcutta organized virtually the third edition of the Professor Amitava Bose Memorial Lecture on 9th February. The lecture was delivered by Nobel laureate Professor Abhijit Banerjee.
I'm proud that our alumni are active contributors to their professions and to their communities around the globe and that they are equally active close to home. Our distinguished alumnus, Shiv Shivakumar has written a wonderful book, "The Right Choice: Resolving 10 Career Dilemmas for Extraordinary Success", he also delivered keynote online address on 5th Arijit Mukherjee Memorial Lecture, organized by IIM Calcutta.
IIM Calcutta registered 100% placement in Summer Placement for 2022 MBA batch as well as in Final placement for 2021 MBA batch. The IIM Act 2017 aims at elevating IIMs as global centres of management education and mandates fundamental structural changes in processes, systems and academic design. To that end, we have commenced systematic review and implementation of key processes for continuous improvement following best practices to yield greater transparency, responsibility and accountability. Read More >IIM Calcutta's flagship MBA program recorded 100% final placements during the placement week that concluded on 3rd March continuing its streak of placing the whole batch. 467 students took part in the process receiving more than 520 offers in three clusters comprising various cohorts. The whole placement process was conducted virtually amid the pandemic. A total of 172 firms participated in the Final Placement process. The average and median salaries rose to INR 29 Lakh and INR 27 Lakh respectively.

IIM Calcutta virtually organized the third edition of the Professor Amitava Bose Memorial Lecture on 9th February. The lecture was delivered by Nobel laureate Professor Abhijit Banerjee.Amidst a virtual audience of over 500 people from across the globe with a mix of students, professors and economists, Prof. Anju Seth, former Director, IIM Calcutta welcomed the distinguished speaker Nobel Laureate Prof. Banerjee to speak on the perceptive subject of the 'Poverty trap'. Honouring Prof Amitava Bose's legacy, Prof Seth shared that she herself was his student at IIM-C and reminisced engaging conversations with him both inside and outside the classroom.

Five students of IIM Calcutta have won the ''Best Teams'' awards at an international academic competition for solving real-life business challenges of corporates, the institute said in a statement. The global X-Culture competition was launched by Dr Vas Taras in 2010. In this global event, students from various countries come together as a team, on a virtual format, to solve international business challenges of companies. Along with their international team members, five MBA students of IIM Calcutta - Soham Basu Chaudhury, Ikjot Kaur, Arun Sharma, Haritha Unnikrishnan and Ritika Verma - were recognised for their excellent performance in a highly competitive process, the statement said on Wednesday. Their teams were picked up from among 45 ''Best Teams'' from 1,277 teams, comprising 5,955 MBA students from 150 universities in 78 countries. Each team was given a problem-solving task for an international business and the business idea was to be submitted in a form of a report. The 1,277 reports submitted were evaluated by a large group of international business experts comprising 174 professors and coaches from 45 countries.

IIM Calcutta has launched Communication Strategies for Corporate Leaders Program, which is a six-month programme that will help participants assume leadership roles amidst diverse and complex corporate business scenarios. Candidates will be able to master the language of leadership and present new paradigms of leading with communication strategy. Professors Pragyan Rath and Apoorva Bharadwaj are the Programme Directors. The key feature of the programme is a novel communication guidebook that can help corporate leaders operationalize their vision and mission. The program is targeted at Senior Managers and Leaders with an experience profile of 8 years or more, who are at least graduates (10+2+3) in any discipline with 50% marks can apply. Information Systems Society recognised IIMC alumnus, and distinguished professor, researcher and author, Dr Anindya Ghose with the ISS Practical Impacts Award for demonstrating outstanding leadership and sustained impact on the IT Industry. He was also shortlisted as the finalist for the ISS Best Paper in Management Science for his paper - Battle of the Channels: The Impact of Tablets on Digital Commerce. Management Science 63(5): 1469-1492, written in collaboration with KaiquanXu, Jason Chan, Sang Pil Han, recognised for its contribution to the theory and practice of information systems.
Renewable energy producer ReNew Power founded by IIMC alumnus Sumant Sinha, has undergone an agreement to merge with RMG Acquisition Corp II, a blank-cheque company or a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). The merger of ReNew Power with RMG Acquisition will result in the former's listing on Nasdaq and gross cash proceeds of around $1.2 billion. The deal is the first involving an Indian company during the latest boom in SPAC deals that have continued in 2021 after witnessing a record year in 2020. In addition to ReNew Power, online grocery platform Grofers is also reportedly in advanced stages of exploring a SPAC deal.

Entrepreneurship Cell of IIM Calcutta launched an interview series with Startup founders called 'Journey of an Entrepreneur'. The series gives enthusiasts a sneak peak into the minds of successful entrepreneurs. The candid interviews also allow budding entrepreneurs to learn about the ups and downs during the journey of getting a business of the ground. The series wishes to tap into the wisdom of these entrepreneurs who decided to take the road less travelled. E-Cell launched the first interview as part of their 'Journey of an Entrepreneur' Interview Series. The first episode was graced by Vineet Patawari, who is founder and CEO of StockEdge - one of India's most highly rated Stock Market Self-Research tools for retail investors.

IIMC Toastmasters Club organized various weekly meetings on topics like 'Digital Minimalism', 'Life is a drama', 'Missing College Life', 'Festivity' etc. Ever the debaters and speakers, IIM Cal students, both members and non members got a chance to win awards for Best Prepared Speech, Best Table Topic Speaker, Best Role-Players and Best Evaluator. The club coordinated with TMC, DTU & TMC NMIMS. DTM Alicia, a senior Toastmaster from Australia joined one of the sessions. The club also received a special appreciation award from the District level and the Division level for highest new member additions, club performance and growth.
INCA, in collaboration with Proactive, a women-run social start up, founded by CEO Achita Jacob, an alumnus of HBS and IIT Bombay, held the second workshop on Periods and Society for women on 10th December. The talk was held on zoom on the topic, Period Poverty & Sustainable Menstruation. Proactive supports groups that get together to talk about their experiences, with related knowledge and resources. Unnati is a program started by team INCA where volunteers go to teach underprivileged children every day, help them grow and educate them so that they can take steps towards a bright future. On the occasion of Diwali, INCA invited volunteers to help these underprivileged kids who have lost their whole connection to education due to COVID and help them become educated. INCA, in collaboration with Proactive, a women-run social start up, founded by CEO Achita Jacob, an alumnus of HBS and IIT Bombay, held the first workshop on Menstruation and Hygiene for women on 5th November. A talk was organized to discuss everything on the topic, Periods and Menstrual Hygiene. They organized an online treasure hunt with HULT Prize IIM Calcutta with virtual clues and exciting prizes. The event was held on Dare2Compete platform on 8th November,2020. In collaboration with the social development committees of IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Lucknow and the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi, they organized a session of the Inter-B-School Speaker Series, with Sharad Vivek Sagar, CEO of Dexterity Global and Pauline Laravoire, Y-East Co-Founder, on the topic: Social leadership - Initiation and way forward. INCA, in collaboration with Goonj, conducted DaanUtsav during October 3-7 wherein IIMC community donated to the needy. The amount collected was used to buy essential products like mosquito nets, bedsheets, educational toys, and stationery for the needy and sent to Goonj through INCA (on behalf of the donors).
Consult Club, in collaboration with vCoach Academy, organized the Masterclass with Evan Piekara, one of the authors of Case in Point. With the motive of further promoting the ever The Consult Club launched the first edition of the Internship Experience Handbook. The handbook is a compendium of the experiences of students of the 56th batch, who interned with various consulting firms this past summer. Everything from the project type, day to day responsibilities to do's and don'ts has been covered, all straight from the horses' (or in this case, students') mouths! They collaborated with The Global Governance Initiative to invite applications for the Consulting and Sustainability Masterclass. It is a unique opportunity for students from top institutes to engage with industry professionals and enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills which are essential for a career in management consulting. In collaboration with vCoach Academy, they presented a Consulting Masterclass with Rajat Gupta (Former Global CEO, McKinsey & Co.). The masterclass is designed to induce problem-solving skills and structured thinking. Learn from the best about the management consulting industry, careers, how to crack the consulting job - the 'Top' view, and much more! Consult Club is also conducting a session with Victor Cheng on January 28th to allow students to get a better insight into the ins and outs of consulting.
The PE-VC Society of IIM-B, in collaboration with finance clubs of IIM-C, IIM-L and IIM-K, organized a speaker session with Mr. Mitesh Daga, Managing Director, TPG Capital on 9th September. This session covered topics ranging from typical private equity lifecycle to current scenario of private equity in India with a focus on the healthcare sector. The FinClub of IIM Calcutta in association with Beta and Networth, finance clubs of IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore, hosted an interesting session on 'Value Investing: Case Studies with Mr. Rajeev Agarwal'. On 19th September FinClub launched the FINeprint - a weekly finance newsletter in October. The newsletter aims to cover major financial news across different segments in a brief and crisp manner along with a unique FIN Question. They also organized the PitchHiker - Soonicorn Pitch Competition from October 5-10th, 2020. The competition gave an opportunity to students to analyze a startup and prepare a mock-pitch. They then got a chance to pitch it to PE-VCs as an I-banker.
The Analytics club, IIM Calcutta in association with Abacus, IIM Ahmedabad and The Analytics Society, IIM Bangalore organized a webinar with Dr. Avik Sarkar, head of Data Analytics Cell of NitiAayog, Government of India on use of Artificial Intelligence in the Public Sector. In the past, Dr. Avik Sarkar was also involved as an Advisor at various government committees like the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) committee for setting the standard for Artificial Intelligence, the Analytics Advisory committee for Government e-Marketplace (GeM), Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of Census 2021 and Advisor towards setting up Data Analytics Center of Excellence by the Government of Assam. He is a TEDx speaker and has been nominated among the 'Top 10 Data Scientists in India' in 2017 by the Analytics India Magazine and was nominated as 'LinkedIn Influencer' in the Technology space in 2015. The Analytics Club, IIM Calcutta, organized a webinar in the inter-college webinar series organized with Abacus, IIM Ahmedabad and The Analytics Society, IIM Bangalore. The speaker of the webinar was Mr. Manas Agarwal, CEO of Affine Analytics. The topics of discussions for the webinar included rising industries/sectors from analytics PoV, strategic business decisions using data analytics, analytics support better decision making, etc. The Analytics Club came up with a basic handbook on analytics covering various tools, current & future growth areas without being too technical to help the PGP1s with preparation for summers 2020.
Choreo club warmly welcomed the 40 members of the 57th batch on 7th September 2020 over a Virtual Dance Party on Zoom. It was tougher this year to audition because of the overwhelming response of 102 talented and enthusiastic dancers in the batch during the auditions. The new members of Choreo club presented the online version of the Badla Beats during 10th and 11th October 2020.The Badlaweek end with 7 teams of Facchas, each in their own unique styles of Hip-hop, Bollywood, Classical,Semi-classical, Belly dance and a lot of other dance forms was thrilling and exciting for the entire Joka in the midst of deadlines and assignments. Choreo club members celebrated Navratri and Durga Pooja with an energetic performance by PGP2 members of the club on 25th October 2020. Popular songs like "AsoAsoDurga Ma", "Kammariya", "DhamDhamBaajeBaaje" and "Sanedo" gave us all the Pujo feels. PGP2 members of Choreo club created a stress-busting dance video to pump up and motivate PGP1s for their Summer Placements on 21st November 2020.
On Sept 30th, The Marketing Group of IIM Calcutta, in collaboration with IIM Calcutta Alumni Cell, Chennai Chapter, flagged off the Annual Strategic Marketing Workshop with its first workshop. Mr Sanjay Singh, an alumnus from the PGP Batch of '94 and Chief Information Officer for Procter & Gamble's AMA region, conducted the workshop titled "Ironsmith vs Goldsmith: Moving from Mass to Precision Marketing". The session, hosted on Zoom, was open to students from MBA I and II, PGPEx, VLMP, PGDBA, and DP. On Nov 7th, The Marketing Group of IIM Calcutta, in collaboration with IIM Calcutta Alumni Cell, Chennai Chapter, hosted the second part of the Annual Strategic Marketing Workshop. The workshop titled "Marketing Careers: The Terrain Ahead" was conducted by Rajesh Kumar (PGP '94)- VP Marketing for UiPath India and South Asia, Puja Vohra (PGP '94)- Executive Vice President, Marketing and Strategy for Showtime Networks, Inc, Pramod Vadlamani (PGP '15)- Senior Product manager for Booking.com and Poornima RM (PGP '15)- marketing manager for Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages. The session, hosted on Zoom, was open to students from MBA I and II, PGPEx, VLMP, PGDBA, and DP.
Hues and 7 Lakes Festival organized the 7 Lakes Logo design competition which called on students to show their creativity and design a logo that encapsulated the spirit of the 7 lakes fest. Hues and CEMS Club organized the Diwali Doodling competition on Google Sheets. The competitions had prizes worth Rs.3000 and a CEMS club Kurta to be won.
JBS BaroC organized an Open Mic Event on 15th November 2020. The event called on students a platform to showcase their talent to the Joka community. The event captured diverse interest from singing, instruments, beatboxing, poetry and shaayari. They organized an Instaakshari from 23-25th October 2020. The event enabled students to sing, tag and post a snippet of a song on social media, to keep the musical chain going. They event encouraged everyone to participate no matter their singing proficiency with a chance to get featured on the JBS BaroC page. They organized a multi-round musical trivia night on 26th August 2020. Students had to team up and compete in a night dedicated to music. The winning team took home a prize of Rs 3000.
ER Cell announced the launch of IIM Calcutta's first monthly newsletter starting this December with a call for articles. The newsletter will cover written pieces by students and faculty members that have been published online. ER Cell flagged off the Bad Ads competition. Open exclusively to PGP1s, the event has been billed as a non-conventional advertising competition. They floated a poll to gauge the student community's opinion on a variety of topics. Results of the poll would feed into a section on student opinions to be featured in the ER Cell newsletter.
Armageddon, the adventure club of IIM Calcutta started the year with a unique way of recruiting candidates as per the most adventurous incidents of the candidates. Joka has always been known for its unique culture which if you mix with some Roadies ruckus, you get something even wilder. With that in mind, 7 Lakes Fest- IIM Calcutta in collaboration with Armageddon, presented "Joka Roadies" where the participants got a chance to showcase their skills at collaboration, endurance & even diplomacy to beat out the rest.
OikosKolkata, organized Asia Meet 2020 in association with, oikos Hong Kong, oikos Jamshedpur, oikos Bangalore, oikos Pune, oikos Suzhou to celebrate the initiative towards sustainable development. A panel discussion was conducted with leaders in the field of Sustainability on the topic, 'Challenges for Leaders of Sustainable Initiatives'. The panelists included: Wilma Rodrigues, Founder of Saahas Zero Waste; Aditi Deodhar, Co-Founder Planeteer HK and External VP at oikos Hong Kong and Dr. Tata L Raghu Ram, Associate Professor, Strategic Management XLRI Jamshedpur. Oikos organized 'QuizTimes' where ?10k was up for grabs on 22 December, 2019.
SPICMACAY conducted an event for all the Jokars, especially for the 57th batch to take their mind off the stress of placements. The event was centred around letting the colours overflow by enabling students to create amazing rangolis to share with both their families at home and at IIM Calcutta. The event saw enthusiastic participation all around, with people creating and sharing some beautiful rangolis. The event was surely a stressbuster for the 57th batch as well as an outlet for the creativity of many on campus. Spicmacay IIM Calcutta presented a Santoor recital by Santoor Maestro Pt. Tarun Bhattacharya at 7PM on 24th December. He was accompanied by Jyotirmay Roychowdhury on Tabla. The event also presented the viewers with an opportunity to interact with the maestro live after the event.
TSEC 2021, a joint initiative between The Tata Group and IIM Calcutta, has been launched to promote early-stage startups. Besides the Cash Reward of Rs 6 Lakhs, this year the winners have an opportunity to pitch to investors for a seed fund of up to Rs 1 crore among other takeaways like incubation at IIM Calcutta InnovationPark and mentoring from renowned mentors and experts.
To add a new variety of life to the assignment cladden Jokars, OutTh!nk rekindled the Joka life by starting withWeekly Cracker Jack where each Friday Outthink uploads a new puzzle to put our wits to work. The Weekly Cracker Jack consisted of a variety of puzzles ranging fromMathematical and LR related puzzles every week to solving the infamous Rubik's cube tutorial by Nevil Kathiria and Harsshi Agarwal. In the super exciting 7 lakes fest, OutTh!nk, in association with the 7 Lakes Fest of IIM Calcutta, organized the exhilarating 'Japanese Pazuru' contest. It showcased an opportunity to battle it out against the best in the businessby pitting wits against puzzles set by the World Sudoku Championship puzzle master. For the folks interested in Economics and Public Policy and those who wished to try their luck in running for theRBI governor, Outthink had an opportunity to showcase their command over economics and public policy byputting them in RBI governor's shoes through analysing a given scenario and taking mock policy decisions as well.
The year kicked off by elected core members in June 2021 and since then, Luminati has never left an opportunity to invigorate our spirits by the beautiful photos of our campus. 7 Lakes Fest- IIM Calcutta in collaboration with Luminati Club, presented the "Inter MBA Photography competition". All entries were judged by CANON EOS Maestro and Brand Ambassador Swaarup Chatterjee on the basis of creativity, originality and overall visual appeal.
Joka-On-Board organized the Dice Forge Tournament on 17th September 2020. The multi-round event was meant to mimic the board game nights at Joka in an online setting. The strategy game got everyone's brain cells active.
The club organized a PM Case Prep Session on 03rd October 2020 by Exponent - "The No-BS Guide for Acing your PM Interviews" in collaboration with Product Management Clubs of IIM Ahemdabad, Bangalore and Lucknow as a part of "CoLAB PM Talks". It was a very special event because the speaker of the session was former Google PM Stephen Cognetta, Founder of Exponent. In the session, Stephen covered topics like Basic Tips on PM interview, Product Design cases, Guesstimates, Behavioural Questions, Root Cause Analysis, Pricing questions and lots more. To assist PGP1s with their Summer Placements, PMTech Club also started with Weekly Tech Wrap-ups with news from the Tech World and Medium blogs to give a better and more insightful understanding about the role and the technical terms associated with it. A few of the interesting themes they have covered include Product Design, Wireframes, AR/VR, ERP and CRM Systems, Product Metrics, Cloud and SaaS, Prioritization, AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Targeted Ads, different Revenue Models and even more. One of the PMTech Club's upcoming events is Decode to Conquer: A Product Management Competition. It is an open-to-all individual competition that will check all your skills to be a good PM - your Tech knowledge about PM Role via an online quiz, your problem-solving skills through a one-slider PM Case submission and your presentation and marketing skills in the final PPT round.
The first edition of the Joka Chronicles was published on 05th September 2020. It contained multiple articles on surviving the first term and a few tips to improve ourselves. Joka Chronicles was filled with tips for Summer Placements, Interview experiences, strategy to keep our calm during the preparations and a talk with our beloved Leena Chatterjee ma'am in its second edition on 09th October 2020.
Your Case or Mine? (Volume 1) was about "To Pineapple or to not Pineapple" discussing whether Pineapple should be on Pizza or not and "Your Favourite Economics Prof. vs The Other One" which was about Communism or Capitalism on 26th September 2020. DebSoc, in association with UBI, conducted a one-of-its-kind conventional debate in the form of a prepared speech on the motion: This house believes that re-capitalisation/consolidation of public sector banks promotes inefficiencies in the economy. The second edition of Your Case or Mine? Discussed the US Elections in their "Straight outta New Jersey - Who's better for India?" debate and "Pureblood or Muggles?" took us into the Wizarding world on 9th November 2020.
CEMS Club launched the JokaMasterChef - IIM Calcutta's first ever Sustainable Cooking Challenge on 9th October. The competition gave students a chance to rekindle your love for cooking, get your family involved and be crowned the undisputed cooking maestro of Joka! ICQC conducted the Annual Freshers' Quiz for first-year students from all programs (including MBAEx) on 5th September 2020. 50 Teams and 108 students participated, and the Winners got direct entry in the club. Badla Quiz, uniting PGP1s, PGP2s and PGP3s was organized on 5th December 2020. Students participated in Teams of 2 or 3 across the years. It was conducted by the Winners of Fachcha Quiz (Annual Freshers' Quiz).
