Prof. Amitava Bose

INTRODUCTION

Dr. Arijit Mukherji was born in Calcutta in 1962. He studied at the St. Xaviers School. He did his B.Com. from St. Xaviers College, Calcutta, and qualified as a chartered accountant. He then moved to the United States and did his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. In 1991, he joined the Accounting department of the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, as an Assistant Professor. In 1997, he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. Sadly, he passed away in 2000, much before his time.

If life is measured in terms of what he achieved, Arijit had a much longer life than the 38 years that he spent on the earth.

He was a prolific scholar. He was widely recognized as a leading scholar in experimental economics. He also did extensive work on financial disclosure, auditing and design incentives in organizations. He published 15 papers in top accounting and economics journals.

To the students, Prof. Mukherji was a legendary teacher. He won numerous teaching awards and was honoured with a Lifetime Teaching award in 2000. He was chosen as an MBA Professor of the Year in 1997 and was honoured with the Curtis Cup Outstanding Teacher of the Year award in 1997 and in 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998.

Arijit (fondly known as Ari) was a highly admired colleague. He had a voracious appetite for the business and financial press and many of his colleagues at the Carlson School were direct beneficiaries of his encyclopaedic knowledge of Accounting and Economic theory and his absolute commitment to work as long as it took to get it exactly right.

University of Minnesota and IIM Calcutta had earlier organized Arijit Mukherji memorial lectures by distinguished scholars. Scholarships for Accounting Ph.D. students at the Carlson School have been established in his memory.

A beloved family member, a relative, and a friend, Arijit possessed many talents. He inherited the parental trait of quietly helping the needy and the distressed. An edited volume of his poems, “The Young Magician & other poems” was posthumously published. In a fitting tribute to this remarkable man, his father late Prashanta Kumar Mukherji and mother Smt. Anuradha Mukherji donated his wealth to support educational and charitable causes.
